Where does Happy Hour originate? We know it’s the best time to get better deals on drinks and food, but why did bars and restaurants offer specials during this “happier” time of day? We’re happy to show you this fun origin story and share some of our specials at Verde Kitchen and Coastal Kitchen.
Why Was Happy Hour Created?
Since we live in a seaside community like Bay Shore, how fitting is it that Happy Hour really began with the U.S. Navy? Yes, it started as a Navy tradition going back to World War I. The USS Arkansas would host entertainment hours for naval servicemen, which usually involved activities like dancing, boxing, wrestling, and music.
Over time, Happy Hour incorporated the drinking element, something that was illicit for a while when the country experienced Prohibition in the 1920s. However, it was the underground speak-easys that coined the term “cocktail hour” as an opportunity for folks to enjoy alcohol in secret. This was how they would “pre-game” before heading to a restaurant thereafter.
Once they repealed Prohibition in 1933, the term Happy Hour became more common and it didn’t have to be secretive any longer. Nowadays, it refers to a time of day where you can enjoy discount drinks. Alas, a few American states have banned Happy Hour, usually through old laws enacted after Prohibition. This is unfortunate for the poor folks in North Carolina, Arkansas, Alaska, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, Utah, Vermont, Indiana, and Massachusetts.
